EAST STREET BALLET DANCERS PREPARE FOR YAGP INTERNATIONAL FINALS AT NEW YORK CITY CENTER
Following their successful performances at the Youth America Grand Prix semi-finals this past January, four young dancers from the East Street School of Ballet were invited to participate in the YAGP International Ballet Scholarship Finals April 17-21 at the Skiball Center of Performing Arts at New York University as well as participate in the International All-Star Gala featuring guest artists from leading dance companies from around the world at New York City Center.

For the finals the East Street dancers will perform two ensemble pieces “Jewels” from the Sleeping Beauty with choreography by Marius Petipa and an original contemporary piece Spring Verse choreographed by their coach and teacher, Irina Vakhromeeva. The East Street dancers will be part of a group of other finalists from Japan, Mexico, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Brazil, Italy, France, Canada, Australia, Portugal, Ukraine, Malasia, China, Romania, Korea, Panama, Russia, United Kingdom, Germany, as well as the United States who will also perform.

Launched in 2000 by former Bolshoi Ballet dancers Larisa and Gennadi Saveliev, the Youth America Grand Prix was organized as a stepping stone to provide extraordinary educational and professional opportunities to young student dancers. The event awards scholarships to the top ballet schools in the world. Since its inception it has become an internationally known meeting place for students and teachers, where they can exchange ideas, share their experiences and learn the most up-to-date information on a variety of dance issues.

In January, the four young dancers participated in the Youth America Grand Prix semi-finals which took place at the Warner Theater in Torrington, CT. That event, drew students from as far away as California and included solo and ensemble performances and all-day workshops with renowned master teachers. Each dancer was required to prepare a classical ballet variation selected from an approved list provided by the YAGP. Each dancer was involved in months of intensive coaching and rehearsal with their primary teacher Irina Vakhromeeva, herself an international artist.

In preparing for these performances each student has been challenged to learn complex choreography that requires not only technique but also tremendous artistry, musicality and stamina. Each student has shown consummate discipline and focus and has gained invaluable insights into the demands and joys of a career in classical ballet.

The ballerina’s are Ilse Kapteyn (age 13) Deerfield, Ingrid Kapteyn (age 16) Deerfield, Sierra McDonald (age 13) Whately, and Nina Shevzov-Zebrun (age 14) Northampton.
